Luis Miramontes was the scientist that invented the first oral contraceptive pill. Luis Ernesto Miramontes was born on March 16, 1925 in Tepic, Nayarit. He died at the age of 79 years old on September 13, 2004.

After inventing the first oral contraceptive pill Luis Miramontes won many awards and recognitions. Here are some of his most important recognitions.
In 1964, the oral contraceptive pill was recognized in the United States.
In 2000, the oral contraceptive pill was named one of the most important inventions.
In 2005, the oral contraceptive pill was named as Mexico’s most important contribution to world science.


Ÿ Luis studied at the (UNAM) Anatomy National University of Mexico.
Ÿ Luis Miramontes then became a professor at the UNAM.
Ÿ Luis became a director and professor at the School of Chemistry at the University of Iberamerica.
Ÿ Luis was also a Director of Research at the Mexican Institute of Petroleum (IMP).
Ÿ Luis Miramontes became a member of the American Chemical Society, Mexican Institute of Chemical Engineers, National Institute of Chemical and Chemical Engineers, Chemical Society of Mexico, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and New York Academy of Sciences.

Contribution to Society:

Luis Miramontes was the inventor of the progestin used in one of the two oral contraceptive pill.

The reason why I chose Luis Miramontes is because as a teenage girl it is very important to prevent teenage pregnancies. Taking precautions is an adult choice that smart people make.
